Looking to add a pop of personality to your windows without spending a fortune? I’ve got just the project for you! Let me show you how to make a Simple Square Valance using your favorite fabrics—and a little sewing magic.

love making my own curtains and valances. Not only does it save money, but it also lets me pick out the exact colors and patterns I want for each room. That way, every window has its own special style—and yours can too!

🧵 Why You’ll Love This Project

This valance is simple, clean, and super customizable. Whether you’re going for cozy farmhouse vibes or something bold and colorful, you can make this design work with any fabric. And if you’re like me and always pre-wash your fabric before sewing, don’t forget to give it a quick press with the iron—it’ll make cutting and stitching much easier!

✂️ What You’ll Need:

  • 6 squares of fabric, 24” x 24” each (mix or match your prints!)
  • Matching thread
  • Needle and sewing machine
  • Scissors and pins
  • Buttons (for a cute finishing touch!)

🪡 Let’s Make It:

  1. Cut Your Fabric Squares
Cut six 24” x 24” fabric squares. You’ll sew two pieces together for each finished valance square.
  2. Sew the Squares
Place two fabric squares right sides together and sew around the edges with a ¼” seam allowance. Leave a few inches unstitched so you can turn it right side out.
  3. Clip & Turn
Carefully clip each corner and along the edges (don’t cut into your seam!), then turn the square right side out. Make sure to push out the corners so they look nice and crisp.
  4. Close the Gap
Hand-sew the opening closed. I like to use an invisible stitch here to keep everything tidy.
  5. Add Buttons (Optional but Cute!)
For the two side pieces, sew a button on the front—about 2 inches down from the top edge. This gives the valance a little extra charm!

🪟 How to Hang Your Valance:

Now for the fun part—hanging your new creation!

  • Side Panels: Fold each side square in half diagonally over the curtain rod so that one half is in front and one is in the back.
  • Center Panel: Fold your middle square in half and drape it over the rod on top of the side panels.

That’s it! You’ve just added custom, handmade beauty to your window with just a few fabric squares and some easy sewing.

🧡 Let Your Style Shine

The best part of this project is how easy it is to swap fabrics for different seasons or room makeovers. Once you make one, you’ll want to make them for every window in the house (don’t say I didn’t warn you 😉).

Let me know if you try it—I’d love to see how your square valance turns out!

Happy sewing,

Carla
