Simple Square Valance

Would you like to learn how to make this simple square valance that is easy to make?

I like to make my own curtains and valances for the windows in our home instead of buying them, as I like to pick out the colors and patterns of the fabric.

All three pieces of the valance are the same size.

This year for the holidays, I decided to change the valance we have in our dining room. I wanted to make something that could be for the holidays with a reversible side that I could change come January for the rest of the winter months.

Since my current valance has green side pieces, I only needed to replace the center pieces.

I went to JoAnn’s and purchased two pieces of fabric, one piece has poinsettia’s on it and the other has snow flakes.

Instructions

  • Being I always wash my fabric before sewing, you may need to iron it afterwards.
  • When making the entire valance
  • valance on one window
  • you will need to cut 6 squares 24 inches by 24 inches out of each piece of fabric.

Sew a square of each piece of the fabric with the right sides facing each other using a 1/4 inch seem allowance.

Before sewing the entire way around the square leave enough space at the end to be able to turn the material right side out.
  • After sewing, cut a small slit at each corner and along the sides every so often, making sure you don't cut your seam.

Now you are ready to pull the material through the opening in order for the right sides to be showing. Make sure the corners are pushed out so that they looked square.

Next hand sew the opening closed.
  • For the two side valance pieces sew a button about two inches down on the front.
  • Now you are ready to hang your new valance.
  • When you hang the two side pieces over the curtain rod you fold them in half and turn them sideways so that half goes in front and half goes in the back.
  • For the middle piece you fold it in half over the curtain rod on top of the side pieces of the valance.
